Babies spend approximately 60% of their first year of life sleeping in their crib. Most people don't even consider an organic mattress and bedding for their baby's crib. Why should you consider an organic mattress and organic bedding for your baby?

Commercial mattresses contain fire retardant materials, cheap glues, petroleum-based synthetics, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC - found in plastics used to waterproof mattresses). Also, one of the factors of the cause of SIDS is chemical exposure from the mattress.

Covering a regular mattress in an organic cover will definitely help, but it will not completely eliminate the chemical exposure. If you are on a budget though, this may be the only option. They are quite expensive, although I found one reasonable option.

 

I recently purchased 100% Organic Cotton and Bamboo sheets for my baby's crib. I found an Etsy shop in Toronto that sells a variety of organic bedding. I love that I was able to purchase items handmade in Canada.
